The Ministry of Culture, through the Museum of Modern Art, began its program of activities for this year with an art exhibit by Fernando Varela, a conference by prominent Puerto Rican filmmaker Jorge Oliver, the Women’s Fashion Gala, and continuing education courses that take place at MAM.


On February 12, at 7:30 pm, at MAM’s first floor, Miss TurismoDominicana, along with the Association of Friends of the Museum of Modern Art, will host the Gala Femenina de la Moda 2013 (2013 Women’s Fashion Gala)…


The exhibit “Orígenes y FormasPrimarias (Origins and Primary Forms)” will open on Wednesday, February 6, at 7:30 pm at MAM’s first floor. The exhibitwill open in the Dominican Republic after touring the city of Cuenca, Ecuador, as part of the Biennial of Cuenca, and Guayaquil, Ecuador. Following its presentation at the MAM, the exhibit will travel to the Centro Cultural Metropolitano in Quito, during the months of May and June.


Meanwhile,??theconference”Cine y Video Experimental (Experimental Film and Video),” by filmmaker Jorge Oliver, will take place at the MAM Auditoriumon Friday, February 8, at 7:30 pm,under the sponsorship of the U.S. Embassy. The conference is open to the public. Jorge Oliveris an Associate Professor inFilm at the renownedWebster University in Saint Louis, Missouri, where he teaches film production and theory.


Oliver has had a prolific career as has produced and edited a total of 13 short films. He has also worked as Director of Cinematography formajor films and documentaries, such as the “Out in the open”, “De colores”, “Pegasus” and “One Hundred Eggs a Minute,” among others.


His films have been featured in film festivals in the U.S. and around the world, including the Cork International Film Festival in Ireland, the Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana, and the Festival of Viña del Mar in Chile.


Oliver’s agenda in the Dominican Republic also includes the seminar “Workshop: Producción de Cine (Workshop: Film Production)”on Saturday, February 9, at 9:00 am. This workshop isintended for filmmakers, producers and artists,and is by invitation only.


On February 12, at 7:30 pm, at MAM’s first floor, Miss TurismoDominicana, along with the Association of Friends of the Museum of Modern Art, will host the Gala Femenina de la Moda 2013 (2013 Women’s Fashion Gala), this time with the participation of 25 leading Dominicandesigners, in a fusion of art and fashion.


The proceeds from the Gala will go toward the Restoration Project of the MAM Work Collection.


In addition, during the month of February, MAM’s Department of Cultural Management will offer continuing education courses aimed at children, teenagers and adults, on topics that include comics, photography, painting, and,in the near future, social networking and crafts.


The Dominican Republic’sMuseum of Modern Art is located on Avenida Pedro HenríquezUreña, Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte, and is open to the public between Tuesday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
