Labor Ministry Initiates Talks on Creating a Network of Labor Information

The Labor Ministry held the first in a series of meetings with government and private sector institutions with the goal of creating the Integrated System of Labor Information (SIIL in Spanish).


On welcoming the attendees of the meeting, Labor Minister Maritza Hernández explained that this is one of the initiatives that her institution is developing that shows how far the Dominican Republic has come in the area of labor.


The project, which has the financial support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), intends to create a single network of official data that reflects the reality of the labor sector in the Dominican Republic with information such as employment and unemployment rates, open positions, among other data.


On welcoming the attendees of the meeting, Labor Minister Maritza Hernández explained that this is one of the initiatives that her institution is developing that shows how far the Dominican Republic has come in the area of labor.


“We are seeking that there be only one network related to employment and unemployment rates, and supply and demand in the Dominican Republicin order to be able to direct professional training efforts toward the appropriate areas,” explains Hernández. Attending the breakfast meeting were representatives of small to medium businesses, the Technical-Professional Formation Institute (INFOTEP), the Central Bank, the Social Security Treasury (TSS) and the IDB.


The creation of the SIIL is part of a political framework the Labor Ministry is developing in order to generate 400,000 new jobs, which President Danilo Medina promised to provide in his inauguration speech on August 16th. The project will be carried out with the signing of inter-institutional agreements so that governmental organizations and private companies provide information to the network, with the aim of improving available information about the labor market.


Representatives of organisms that will make up the SIIL congratulated the Labor Ministry for the creation of the system, which they described as necessary for national development.
