Culture and CONADIS organize workshop on the rights of persons with disabilities

The Directorate of Special Projects of the Ministry of Culture, in coordination with the National Council on Disability (CONADIS for its acronym in Spanish), organized the “Workshop on the rights of people with disabilities and their treatment with dignity.”

Alma Ferrera, CONADIS facilitator, was in charge of the training workshop, together with Manuel Frías, director of Special Projects and María del Carmen Ramírez, coordinator.

The objective of this type of initiatives is to raise awareness, to promote respect for the rights of people with a special condition,and to eliminate discrimination against them.

Mr. Frías reported that, by the end of this month, the Ministry of Culture will open a Cultural Center (Casa de la Cultura) for people with disabilities, which will be located across the street from the Javilla Park, in the National District.

During the workshop, Ms.Ferrera emphasized that the current primary mission of CONADIS is to promote equal rights and opportunities for people with disabilities.

She noted that in 2008 the United Nations (UN) signed an agreement which stipulates that Member States must take action to implement the rules and policies established thereof for this sector.

Referring to individuals with special needs, the facilitator emphasized that the appropriate expression to refer to them is people with disabilities.

The primary functions of this agency are to coordinate with other entities, actions aimed at promoting social inclusion policies.

CONADIS was created in the year 2000 under Law 42-2000 on Disability in the Dominican Republic.
