A group of some 100 students from Centro Educativo Jean Piaget and accompanying teachers got the opportunity to discover the awe, wonder and rich biodiversity of the Dominican Republic at an environment exhibit currently on show at the Gran Teatro de Cibao in Santiago.

The Environment Photo Exhibit, which will be on display in Santiago until December 3, continues its travels throughout the Dominican Republic next year.

The Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment Photo Exhibit, inaugurated on November 8, offers 113 panels of images giving basic knowledge to the general public on topics about the environment and conservation methods.

On Friday, November 23, the Jean Piaget students were warmly greeted by the Gran Teatro’s director, Brenda Sánchez and her staff, and given a guided tour of the facilities. During the visit, the students from grades 4, 10, 11 and 12, were able to view images of animals and  places never seen before, and were introduced to important issues such as the expansion of Lake Enriquillo, and endangered flora and fauna. The Exhibition also provided an invaluable opportunity for the students and teachers alike to gather around this unique educational experience designed to broaden horizons and foster a sense of ownership and national pride in the conservation of their nation.

The Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment Photo Exhibit, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) wonderfully unites information on the environment and natural resources of one of the Caribbean’s richest and most ecologically diverse nations. The exhibit incorporates information from a wide range of disciplines, including chemistry, physics, geology, biology, atmospheric engineering, earth and soil sciences, geography, demography, economics and law.

The Exhibit, which was inspired by the book of the same name, features an incredible 712 defined environmental terms, 58 table sets, 123 graphics, 19 scientific articles and over 900 photographs. The volume is sure to serve as an important reference for generations of students, environmentalists and citizens. The book itself is divided into three main sections – scientific articles; definitions of terms and concepts; and a resource guide containing a map of national protected areas, a directory of environmental organizations and government agencies and a list of endemic flora and fauna.

The Photo Book and Exhibit both form part of the Foundations’ overall goal to promote the Dominican Republic, disseminate information about the country, and strengthen appreciation of the country’s ecology and biodiversity.
