The Ministry of Education (MINERD in Spanish) is training 500 teachers who will then pass on their knowledge to some 75,000 volunteers to join the National Literacy Plan, “Quisqueya Learns with You.” The program, to begin in December, seeks to teach more than 800,000 people to read and write over the course of the coming two years.


To these ends, the technical team of the National Literacy Program is working to define the method and content of the training program for the volunteers and facilitators who will be part of this process.

This information was released by the Education Minister, Josefina Pimentel, at a meeting of regional and district school directors who met to publicize the National Literacy Plan and to lay outactivities to fulfill the organizational and labor plan of this project.


Throughout the meeting, held in the VíctorEstrella Liz School in Santo Domingo, Minister Pimentel said the personnel who will make up the volunteers is comprised of experienced teachers, many of whom have degrees in adult education while others have the profile and experience to do this type of training.

The volunteers have expressed their desire to participate in the literacy program that will depend on their professional profile and time availability of those interested in joining in.

“A large number of a variety of organizations have registered and are prepared to get involved in the literacy program. We have had meetings with international organizations such as the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI), UNESCO, the Churches, Cardinal Nicolás de JesúsLópez Rodríguez and various business people,” said the Education Minister.


Planned Assemblies


Miriam Camilo, Director General of Education for Youth and Adults of MINERD, spoke with regional and district education directors. She laid out the time line for the assemblies to be held in the provinces throughout November with the goal of organizing the provincial and municipal literacy programs.


The program began on November 12 in Bahoruco, in the conference hall of the regional Education District of Neiba, at 10:00 a.m. It continued on Thursday the 15th at 5:00 p.m. in Santiago at the Cursa-UASD center; Friday the 16th as the UASDuniversity centers in Hato Mayor and Puerto Plata, at 3:00 p.m. and in the province of Santo Domingoat the UTESA amphitheater in Santo Domingo West at 4:00 p.m.


More times and place include: Saturday the 17th, assemblies will be held in Moca, Espaillat Province at the Palace of Dreams; in San José de Ocoa at theIndotel center. Both will be held at 10:00 a.m. On this same day in the provinces of San Juan and Independencia, at the UASDauditorium and the Casino Jaragua in Duvergé, respectively at 3:00 p.m. On Friday the 23rd inMaría Trinidad Sánchez, MonseñorNouel, Santiago Rodríguez andAzua, at 3:00 and 4:00 pm.


The meetings in the provinces will end on Saturday November 24 inValverde, Elías Piña, La Vega andSamaná, all to be held simultaneously.
