Villa de Santo Domingo Concerts Presents “Majestic Concerts in Colonial City”

Villa de Santo Domingo Concerts presents, in its second version, a series of concerts, recitals and educational events from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. These internationally high quality concerts will also be held in Santiago de los Caballeros.

This year the invited artists are members of the renowned Axiom Brass Quintet from Chicago, Illinois.

This important cultural event, directed at the entire family, will be held on November 19 and 24 in such emblematic places as the Museum of the Casas Reales, the Dominicos Church Convent and the Dominica Quinta. These events are made possible by support from sponsors including Banco Popular Dominicano, the Propagas Foundation and the Ministry of Tourism, which views this project as a way to support the “Tourism Promotion of Colonial City of Santo Domingo.” The main objective is to open new tourism markets that will serve to complement the traditional Dominican offering of sun and surf with a type of tourism based on the country’s historic and cultural wealth such as that found in the Colonial City that was declared a Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

A Wide Reaching Cultural Exchange.

The “Night in the Gardens” event on November 21-22 in the Quinta Dominica, corresponds to two gala concerts offered to the general public who will have the opportunity to attend the Axiom Brass Quintet performance along with a selection of music of Gabrieli, Byrd and Bach from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. They will also be treated to Latin American music of Astor Piazzolla and music in the style of “Holiday Brass.” Prior to the concerts, there will be guided tours of the Quinta.

Workshops and Master Classes for Music Students.

In addition, the music events will be combined with master classes and selected rehearsals for music students, to be given by members of the Axiom Brass Quintet. One of these rehearsals will be directed at members of the wind and brass sections of the National Youth Orchestra. The participating instruments in the rehearsal are the trumpet, trombone, tuba and French horn. There will also be a Rehearsal-Fusion of the members of the National Youth Orchestra and the Axiom Brass Quintet.

The organization of these musical events and concerts is an initiative of the Villa de Santo Domingo Foundation, Inc., a non-profit society that supports activities that promote the arts and education. Events coordinator is Yolanda Borrás, who also functions as the Executive Director of Education.  John Thomas Dodson is the artistic director.
