Dominican Architecture Day, Saturday November 3rd marked the beginning of the largest cultural expression of this profession in our country.


Others present were BicharaKhoury, president of the Societyof Architects of the Dominican Republic; president ofCODIA, Esther Morillo; curator of the Ibero-American exhibition, Ana LópezOrtego and Inés Sánchez de Madarriaga, who both serve on the Awards Jury.


The Ministry of Culture, in coordination with the Museum of Modern Art, the Embassy of Spain, Nuevarquitectura Group, Inc. (GNA), the Society of Architects of the Dominican Republic (SARD) and the College of Dominican Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (CODIA) joined in the inauguration of the XI International Architecture Biennial of Santo Domingo 2012, with Spain as the guest of honor.


Those attending the inaugural event included the Director General of Museums of the Ministry of Culture, Ana MaríaConde; representing the Ministry of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez; the Council from the Spanish Embassy, Antonio Ramos; Director of the Museum of Modern Art, María Elena Ditrén; president of NuevarquitecturaGroup and creator of the International Architecture Biennials of Santo Domingo, Emilio Brea,as well as the architect Omar Rancier.


Others present were BicharaKhoury, president of the Societyof Architects of the Dominican Republic; president ofCODIA, Esther Morillo; curator of the Ibero-American exhibition, Ana LópezOrtego and Inés Sánchez de Madarriaga, who both serve on the Awards Jury.


On this occasion, the Biennial is showing a retrospective of the VII Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism, sponsored by the Embassy of Spain. In addition to the central exhibition of the Biennial Projects and Works Confrontation is the Puerto Rico Biennial Awards 2011. The exhibits are in the basement, first and second floor of the Museum of Modern Art.


As part of the XI International Architecture Biennial of Santo Domingo(BIASDin Spanish) Antonio CasasnovasGuidicelli will be recognized for his life’s work. A posthumous homage will be paid to the late Dominican architects, Pablo Morel Mercado and Eduardo RozasAristy, and the Puerto Rican architect,HéctorArce Quintero.


The 11th BIASD has developed a full academic program that incorporates all of the local universities and related institutions as well as welcoming such international architects like Ana López, Luis Vidal and Inés Sánchez de Madariagafrom Spain and Kathy MacDonald from Costa Rica.


The objective of the Biennial is to promote the production of architectural and urban, national and international as well as all types of design in their various project phases including constructions produced in the Dominican Republic or abroad and that deserve attention and publicity because of their theme, innovative criteria, use of adequately advanced technology and/or that possess other attributes that can be beneficial.


The XI International Architecture Biennial of Santo Domingo 2012will be open to the public until January 27, 2013 in the Museum of Modern Art of theDominican Republic, located in the Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza. Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
