Alfaguara, Prisa Dominican Republic Publications (Santillana), presents their latest book for young readers around the country. “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” is an original story of fantasy, amazing characters and lots of magic. The story looks at the differences between two towns that cannot find peace and love from two people who seek it.


In the Dominican Republic, “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” is available in all major bookshops and department stores. The 467-page book costs $695 Dominican pesos.


“Daughter of Smoke and Bone” [“Hija de humo y hueso”] has attracted the attention of teens as well as adults because of the unique writing style of US novelist, Laini Taylor, who introduces her main character, Karou, a 17-year-old art student who lives between two universes.


The book was lauded by international literary critics including the New York Times which called it “an impressive romance about destiny, hope and the search for oneself.”


In the Dominican Republic, “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” is available in all major bookshops and department stores. The 467-page book costs $695 Dominican pesos.


Currently, Alfaguara and the Cuesta Bookshop are giving away a lucky necklace (important element in the story) with the purchase of one copy of the novel. This promotion is only available to the first 100 buyers.


The novel also received awards in the United States from Publisher’s Weekly Best Books of 2011, the School Library Journal’s Best Books of 2011 and Kirkus Reviews Best Teens Books of 2011.


The book’s success in sales and critics has been such that Universal Pictures has confirmed the purchase of the rights, opening the door to a movie based on the novel.


Laini Taylor has written three other books: “Blackbringer,” “Silksinger” from the Dreamdark saga and “Lips Touch: Tree Times”, which was a National Book Award finalist.  Ms. Taylor lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, the illustrator, Jim Di Bartolo, and her daughter, Clementine.
