A Film Series on Human Rights will Take Place at the Spanish Cultural Center
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, September 30, 2012


This coming Wednesday, September 24, at 7:00 p.m., the Spanish Cultural Center in Santo Domingo will open a film series that invites reflection on various issues that concern humanity, including violations of human rights, social justice and peaceful coexistence, social and cultural diversity and the pursuit of an individual or collective sustainable humanity.


The film series will open on September 26 and will run until the end of the year. A film screening will take place every two weeks, on a Wednesday. The series will also include a section dedicated to children.


The film screeningsare beingorganized in collaboration with the Barcelona Film Festival and Human Rights, and will present some of the works of fiction, animation and documentary films that have won awards at the festival.


The film series will open on September 26 and will run until the end of the year. A film screening will take place every two weeks, on a Wednesday. The series will also include a section dedicated to children.


It is also important to highlight that at the end of each screening there will be a discussion forum so that attendees may ask questions and provide inputs on the topic in question. Each section of the cycle will be conducted by representatives of different NGOs that are present in our country.


“SILENT SNOW,”directed by Jan van den Berg in 2011 in the Netherlands, is the documentary film which will kick off this season.It shows how chemical waste from around the world, such as the DDT pesticide, accumulates invisibly in the Arctic and poisons the Inuit community.


In Silent Snow, a group of Inuit undertakes a world tour that will show them the impact of DDT in 3 different continents.

On October 10 the following films will be screened:


JE VOUS PRIE DE SORTIR,by Valérie Théodore (France, 2011), 18 min. It won the official selection prize as “Best Short Film.”


Remy, a tramp, has received an invitation to a gourmet dinner at the Le Weplerrestaurant. He decides to change his appearance, and so they allow himto enter into the desired place.


TASTE THE WASTE, by ValentinThurn (Germany, 2011), 88 min.


Incredible but true: from the farm to the dinner table, more than half of the food is thrown away and much of this food never reaches the consumers. Why is it that increasingly such large amounts of food are being destroyed? This documentary seeks explanations.


And, on Oct. 24,there will be a presentation of a selection of short films recounting the events of the Arab Spring revolutions.


TUNISIE, LA RÉVOLUTION EN MARCHE,by Gilles Jacquier (France, 2011), 30 min. The “Journalism and Human Rights”prizewas awarded posthumously and out of competition.
