The Ministry of Culture, the Embassy of Brazil, the Imagen 83 Foundation, the Centro de la Imagenand the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), opened the Dominican Republic’s International Photography Festival Photoimagen 2012.


The opening ceremony was held at the Museum of Modern Art and had four major exhibits: “¿De los hijos de la Tierra?” a group exhibit by Brazilian artists AdenorGondim, Claudia Guimarães, Cia. de Foto, EduSimões, Helena Martins Costa, MestreJúlio Santos, Marlene Bergamo, Pablo di Giulio, Ricardo Barcellos and Felipe Morozine. The curator of the exhibit is Diógenes Moura.

The exhibit “Reanimados” is also being shown. It contains works by Gonzalo Cordero de Ciria, TomásPichardo, Elena Wen, and Juan Carlos Guzmán Navarro. Also,the exhibit “Tierra en Trance” is a group exhibit by artists Glauber Rocha, Adler Guerrier, Celeste Seligman, Colectivo PP (Pichirilo+Pappaterra) feat,Hjalmar Gómez, QuisqueyaHenríquez, Máximo Del Castillo, Juan Basanta, Manuel Mathieu, AriadnaCanaán, FuedYamilKoussa, Gladys Alvarado, FerFigherasandFausto Ortiz.Both of these exhibits are curated by Sara Hermann.


The group exhibit “Memento Mori”, curated by Carlos Ruiz Steel, includes works by artists from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the United States, Mexico, Israel, Ecuador, Chile, Paraguay, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.


The festival was chaired by José Antonio Rodríguez, Minister of Culture; Maria Elena Ditrén, Director of the Museum of Modern Art; Mayra Johnson, Director General of Photoimagen; Carlos Acero Ruiz, Director General of the Art Festival; and Sara Hermann, curator.


This is Photoimagen’s sixth edition. Its theme is “Tránsitos” and Brazil,as the guest of honor, is offering photo exhibitions and workshops by invited national and international artists, solo and group exhibitions, workshops and lectures at more than 29 sites hosting the works of 87 photographic artists that have been selected for the 2012 edition.


The Dominican Republic’sMuseum of Modern Art is located on Avenida Pedro HenríquezUreña, Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte, and is open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
