Eighth International Festival of Contemporary Dance

Theeighth edition of the International Festival of Contemporary Dance, Edanco, returns to the Palace of Fine Arts under the production of PROYES and EDANCO, with national and international representation of one of the most important festivals of contemporary dance in the country.

EDANCO has become one of the unavoidable events in the country’s dancing scene. This event has an eight consecutive-year trajectory and has contributed to the development and professionalization of contemporary dance.

For the eighth year, Santo Domingo has become an international showcase of movement and music with the festival of contemporary dance. The Dominican diaspora abroad will be represented by Dominican dancer Diego Arvelo, who resides in Canada and is the son of Mirito Arvelo,the glory of the Dominican dance.

Since 2005 the event has been organized by the Encuentro de Danza Contemporánea (EDANCO), and this year’s edition will be put togetherunder the auspices of the General Directorate of Fine Arts (DGBA for its acronym in Spanish) and the Spanish Cultural Center (CCEfor its acronym in Spanish), which seeks to give exposure to choreography and creativity through the presentationof works committed with scenic freedom, beauty and artistic distinction in each of the pieces.

The festival will feature a presentation of “SCENE D-Solos, Duets and Trios” from the Edanco Foundation, which has been endorsed by the CCE and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECIDfor its acronym in Spanish), which seeks to encourage dance creators to submit individual or multipleproposals, as a way to act as a catalyst for their creative processes and their choreographic projects under development.

The eighth version of the International Festivalof Contemporary Dance, EDANCO 2012, is looking towards the Caribbean,where there are great dance companies that are very important for theCaribbean region,which is in the process of showcasing the incorporation of talent, through the choreography of countries that share the same geographical space.

Dance companies from Canada, the United States, Spain, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Martinique, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Edanco 2012 will offer the Dominican public their new dance choreographiesfrom September 18thuntil September 25th.

Its artistic director, Edmundo Poy, has pledged his commitment towards contemporary dance in order to showcase the work of choreographers committed with quality and experimentation.
