Federation of Dominican Municipalities Calls on Towns to Join Disaster Prevention Work

In the face of the imminent arrival of Tropical Storm Isaac in the southern part of the country, the Federation of Dominican Municipalities(FEDOMU in Spanish) called on local governments to collaborate with aid and assistance organizations for the prevention and mitigation of disasters.

Víctor D’ Aza, Executive Director of FEDOMU, in a press communiqué, asked local mayorsand district municipal directors to make available their equipment, personnel and support to coordinate joint actions with assistance organizations.

He also urged municipal authorities to put into practice the special garbage-collection programs of as a way of avoiding the stagnation of water, which could later cause illness.

Mr. D’ Aza stressed the need to avoid repeating situations such as that which occurred in the past in Tamboril, Santiago Province where a cholera outbreak was detected.
