Indiscriminate Tree Cutting Denounced in Jarabacoa
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 8/20/2012

On Monday, the lawyer for a real estate company lodged a legal complaint against the indiscriminate cutting down of 72 pine trees on privately owned land in Jarabacoa where an unauthorized highway is being built.

Martínez explained that the perpetrators used heavy machinery to cut the trees and open a 3-kilometer wide path that stretched across private property, all without authorization.

In a communiqué, attorney Pedro Martínez of the Sabinca S.A. Real Estate Company, accused Rolando Antonio Almánzar and/or José Nicolás de la Cruz of illegally cutting down the pine trees without the environmental permits to do so.

According to Mr. Martínez, the felling of the trees affects the waters of the Cano stream in La Cabirna, Jarabacoa.

“The 72 felled pine trees, according to an environmental supervisor, represent27 different species, hence we catalogue their destruction as an attack on the flora of this area,” Martínez wrote in his official denunciation.

He said he had proof that the Ministry of Environment had not authorized the cutting down of these trees.
