José Antonio Rodríguez Appointed New Minister of Culture Dominican singer José Antonio Rodríguez was recently designated as the new Minister of Culture by President Danilo Medina, substituting former Minister, José Rafael Lantigua. The designation of Rodríguez represents a boost for music in the Culture Ministry where, up to now, it has been somewhat marginalized. Rodriguez was appointed in the first decree of cabinet appointments emitted by the newly elected government shortly after DaniloMedina was sworn in as President of the Republic. Once the decree was made public, Rodríguez was sworn, in along with other cabinet members who will work with President Medina in his mission of governing the country. The designation of Rodríguez represents a boost for music in the Culture Ministry where, up to now, it has been somewhat marginalized. Rodríguez, an enthusiastic promoter of culture through his singing and song writing, has been emphasizing the need to reorganize the Ministry whose main activity has been the International Book Fair since it was created. Rodríguez’s songs are known for their sophisticated lyrics and pure melody. His well-known songs include,”Para quererte,” sung by Maridalia Hernández, and won a prize at the 1985 Song Fest of Viña del Mar, in Chile and “Como un bolero” which was made popular by singer Sergio Vargas. Rodríguez, along with a group of artists and entertainment reporters, recently announced the Dominican Music Foundation’s(Fundomusica in Spanish) plan to create a Cooperative for musicians to promote approval of the Music Lawin the National Congress.
