A  total of 35 books will be presented as part of this year’s 15th International Book Fair (FIL in Spanish) which opens on April 18. The book launches are part of the intense publications program being carried out the by the publishing units of the Ministry of Culture.

Among the publications is the first Poetry Anthology of Haitian and Dominican poets published in the Dominican Republic under the title “Palabras de una isla: antología de poesía dominicana y haitiana” [Words from an Island: Anthology of Dominican and Haitian Poetry], a selection by Gashton St. Fleur and Basilio Belliard. The anthology was published by Ediciones de Cultura.


Others to be launched by the Ministry of Culture include the previously unpublished books of Pedro Henríquez Ureña and Pedro René Contín Aybar and a complete collection of the work and notes of  Max Henríquez Ureña, in 28 volumes.


Ediciones Ferilibro, will present a total of 15 new titles:



  • Conferencias Magistrales 2011 (Keynote Speeches). A volume of the keynote speeches given by invited writers at last year´s Book Fair.
  • Colloquiums 2011. A collection of scholarly presentations given by members of debate panels at last year´s Book Fair.
  • “Manual para asesinar narcisos” Poems by Rosalinna Benjamín, winner of the 2011 FIL Prize for the Young Poet.
  • “Cuentos de nunca acabar” A collection of all the winners of the 2011 FIL Young Short Story Award.
  • “Oferta de empleo y otros cuentos” by Enriquillo Sánchez. Book from this year´s Book Fair dedicated to the renowned narrator, poet and essayist. This book will circulate as a special collection and tradition of the Book Fair and a popular publication. It includes a selection and prologue written by José Rafael Lantigua, with drawings done for this special edition by well-known painter, Jorge Severino.
  • “Bojear” Collected poetry of Enriquillo Sánchez.
  • “Un asombro de ríos verticales” Collected poetry of Pedro Mir.
  • “Confidencias en torno al oscuro destino de la única mujer fatal” Collected stories of Roberto Marcallé Abreu.
  • “Tres novelas cortas (El paraíso; Francisca Flores; Otoño)” by Armando Almánzar Rodríguez, 2012 National Prize for Literature.
  • “Cuentos infantiles del Caribe: Cuba, Puerto Rico y República Dominicana” Famous Dienteleche collection published by Ediciones Ferilibro and Ediciones Unión, of Cuba, 15 years ago.
  • “Mariposa de arena” New novel by Ligia Minaya Belliard.
  • “Ernesto Cardenal, del paso a la explosión” New essay by young writer, Luis Arévalo.
  • “Payola, derecho e industria musical” by Juan Miguel Castillo Roldán.
  • “Esto no es una antología” Selected literary works by the El Arañazo Collective.

The Editora Nacional, will present 7 new titles from its different collections:



  • “Versos” This is a collection of 29 totally unknown poems written by Pedro Henríquez Ureña. These poems were discovered by Néstor Rodríguez, essayist and university professor in Montreal and Salamanca, among Henríquez Ureña´s personal files in the Colegio de México. This collection is among the most important to be presented at the 2012 Book Fair.
  • “De todo un poco y de nada un mucho (Charlas de sobremesa) ” A heretofore unknown book by literary critic, Pedro René Contín Aybar, which the author did as a handmade, handwritten sample in 1927, 85 years ago. This is an authentic and novel piece of history and a revelation of the skills of writer and famous literary critic from the 1940s and 1950s.
  • “Venir con cuentos” by Dominican writer José Rafael Lantigua.
  • “La Jom Atenda” by Dio-genes Abreu. Winner of the Theater Prize at Ultramar 2012.
  • “Antropología dramática” by Esteban Torres. Winner of Essay Prize at  Ultramar 2012.
  • “El rey necio” by Koldo Campos Sagaseta. Winner of Children´s Literature Prize at Ultramar 2012.
  • “Ontología de la palabra”. Poetry by Karina Rieke.

Los Cuadernos de Cultura Publisher is presenting these five new titles:



  • “Hay un país en el mundo para leer en el Metro” by Pedro Mir.
  • “Cuentos para los más chiquitos” by Juan Bosch.
  • “Aída Cartagena, Hilma Contreras y Juan Bosch al aguafuerte” by Emelda Ramos.
  • “Nanocuentos” The winning short fiction pieces from the 2010 and  2011 Ministry of Culture competition.
  • “Del Partenón al Faro de Colón: apuntes para la historia del teatro dominicano” by Angel Mejía.

Other new books that will be launched at the Book Fair, published by the Ministry of Culture:



  • “Todo por culpa de Lensky”. Novel by Diógenes Valdez.
  • “La verdadera historia del Generalísimo” Novel by Haffe Serulle.
  • “Anadel, la novela de la gastrosofía” by Julio Vega Batlle.
  • “Mujer que llamo Laura y otros cuentos premiados” by Aquiles Julián.
  • “El otro círculo. Cuentos casi completos y dos casi novelas” by Luis R. Santos.
  • “Bocanadas de Chimenea” Collected stories of Miguel Phipps Cueto.
  • “De cementerios, varones y tumbas. Múltiples caras de la muerte en la cultura y la literatura dominicana” by Franklin Gutiérrez.

These books were put into circulation at the Pre-Fair Narrative held last Friday in the Pedro Mir Forum of the Cuesta Book Shop, with the exception of “Anadel, la novela de la gastrosofía” whic was presented at the Pre-Inaugural Cycle. Franklin Gutiérrez´s book will be launched on April 13th in the Museum of Casas Reales. The remaining books will be presented on April 12 at a cocktail to be held in the Arte Ramón Oviedo Hall of the Ministry of Culture. Following this, they will be presented individually at the Book Fair.


A total of 35 new books and 28 volumes of the “Works and Notes of Max Henríquez Ureña” will be published by the Ministry of Culture and presented to the public on April 10 at 8 PM in the Ravelo Hall of the Eduardo Brito National Theater.


The 15th International Book Fair Santo Domingo 2012 is open from April 18 to May 6 at the Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza. This year´s Guests of Honor are the Central American countries. The Book Fair 2012 is dedicated to the late Dominican poet, narrator and essayist, Enriquillo Sánchez.
