The Ministry of Culture offered the lecture entitled “Impact of the Constitution of Cádiz on the Dominican everyday life and institutional life,” by Scholar and Historian Wenceslao Vega. Thelecturetook place in theAuditorium of Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), as part of the Pre-Opening Series of the 2012 Santo Domingo Book Fair.


Vega presented a brief review of the impact of the Magna Carta on Spain’s and Santo Domingo’s historical, legal and political issues.

He noted that historically it represented a great effort of democratization for the Spanish people, given that it established a parliamentary regime.

“This Constitution served to attach importance to people’s rights and to prepare the country for independence; for this reason, this text should be studied more in depth as part of the Dominican history,” concluded Vega.

Accompanying the speaker were Historian Héctor Luis Martinez, Marco Herrera, Director of FUNGLODE, Pedro Valdez, Executive Director of the Book Fair, and Economist Bernardo Vega.

The Fair’s Pre-Opening Series will continue with the celebration of “La Noche Brava del Libro” on Wednesday, March 28, from 6 to 10 pm, at the Library of Culture, and will include exceptional discounts and bargains; while the Central American Film Series will take place between April 10 and 17, at the Dominican Cinematheque.

The Pre-Opening narrative will be held on Wednesday, April 7, at the Cuesta Bookstore, at 6 pm. These events will continue on Thursday, April 12, at 6 pm, with the presentation of the literary works that the editorial departments of the Ministry of Culture will make available as part of the Book Fair program of activities. This traditional event will take place in the Ramon Oviedo Art Room.

Finally, on Friday, April 13, the Book Fair Pre-Opening Series will come to a close with the presentation of the play “De cementerios, barones y tumbas. Múltiplescaras de la muerte en la cultura y la literaturadominicana” by renowned researcher and writer Franklin Gutiérrez, Professor at the York College in New York. The closing ceremony will take place at 7:30 pm, in the Aida Bonnelly de Diaz Hall of Culture, at the Eduardo Brito National Theatre.
