Argos Cuban Theater Group Performs in Casa de Teatro

The Argos Theater Group, directed by Carlos Celdrán, one of Cuba’s most outstanding directors, presented “Aire Frio” (Cold Air) by playwright Virgilio Piñera. The play was performed at Casa de Teatro in Santo Domingo on Monday and Tuesday, March 19 & 20^th under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

Mr. Celdrán said the play is “the family biography of Virgilio Piñera, a portrait of that period, the demolishing footsteps of time, the absurd and progressive repetition of daily incidents that demand an overwhelming, monumental, excessive stage construction for my current purposes.  Hence, I went back and read the play, again and again. At a given, moment, I decided to do it. Somehow I had discerned, through all of the above, its extraordinary simplicity.”

“Virgilio goes through (and puts us through) his family hell (our hell, everyone’s hell), he sees the dead, the condemned and, in an ambivalent impulse, he asks them for forgiveness. Circle by circle, he takes us with him to the bottom, to the mud,” concluded Celdrán.

The Cuban delegation was comprised of nine actors and two stage technicians. The actors included Cuba’s Yuliet Cruz, the outstanding Pancho García, who recently won the National Theater Prize in Cuba; Verónica Díaz and Michaelis Cué, among others.
