Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic  2/27/2012

The Office of the First Lady (DPD in Spanish), under the direction of Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, has developed an ongoing community radio project throughout the entire country. They are called CTC Radio in that they broadcast from within the Community Technology Centers (CTC) where cultural and educational development programs as well as orientation and prevention programs are put on the air. This project has been underway since the beginning of First Lady Cedeño de Fernández’s position as head of the DPD.

The goal of the CTC Radios is oriented toward the well-being of the communities through social, economic and cultural development. They are all located in rural areas and remote areas around the Dominican Republic.

Cedeño de Fernández describes the CTC Radios as a space for dialogue, integration, education and participation for everyone in the communities who find a place to express themselves and their concerns through these radio broadcasts.

Up until now, the DPD has installed 76 CTC Radios on FM frequency; 70 % of the content is educational. The objective is orienting and developing topics of local interest while placing an emphasis on abuse and child labor, the prevention of illnesses and teen pregnancy and programs aimed at homemakers as well as shows on caring for and protecting the environment, among other topics.

Also, when adverse weather conditions, natural disasters and emergency situations occur, the CTC Radios keep communities informed by broadcasting bulletins and updates from the Center of Emergency Operations (COE in Spanish) so that citizens can take precautions to protect themselves, their families and their communities.

In commemoration of World Radio Day, February 13, the Office of the First Lady, as a member of the National Commission of the Society of Information and Communication, broadcast a series of activities connected to the world celebration on all 76 of the country’s CTC Radio networks.

Among the activities was a message from the Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova.  There were also a series of interviews of communicators and media personalities, as well as interviews with important individuals and community leaders who have radio shows. They shared their experiences and how their lives have changed after their involvement with these radio shows and what benefits these programs are reaping for the communities.
