The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the Dominican Navy undertook a reforestation program in the area around the Las Calderas Naval Base in the province of Peravia.


She said planting along the coast is not just a simple reforestation of the base area, but is the beginning of a series of joint projects that include coastal and underwater water clean-ups …


The activity was headed by Ydalia Acevedo, Deputy Minister of Coastal and Marine Resources, and Commandant of the Calderas Naval base, Navy Captain Mario Alberto de Jesús Reynoso, who expressed the commitment on the part of each of their organizations to work for an environmentally healthy nation for future generations.


Deputy Minister Acevedo said the program was undertaken jointly with the Navy because of the strong interest it had shown in the reforestation of its front esplanade and the coastal species in the area around the naval base.


She said planting along the coast is not just a simple reforestation of the base area, but is the beginning of a series of joint projects that include coastal and underwater water clean-ups and include getting rid of the nets that are obstacles to the free movement of the area´s plant and animal life.


The reforestation work days will take place periodically in various places where there is a Navy presence. The stated goal is to restore the marine coastal ecosystems.


Technicians from the Ministry of Environment, Navy, Coast Guard, students from the Las Calderas School and athletes from the Salinas Youth Association took part in the reforestation project in which they planted olives, saonaa, guayacán and mangos.


Naval Base Commandant of Las Calderas, Jesús Reynoso, thanked the Ministry and gave his word that the Chief of the Navy and the Armed Forces is committed to the preservation of the environment and natural resources.


Lidia Mateo, Coordinator of the Salinas Youth Association stressed the social commitment of the community´s youth to the environment and said that they intend to follow-up on the tree-planting being done by the Ministry and the Navy.
