Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 12/13/2011

The Ministry of Education (MINERD in Spanish) and the General Directorate of the Fine Arts Institute will undertake a training program with the goal of increasing the theoretical and practical competencies of Dominican teachers in the various areas of visual and fine arts which should enable them to develop artistic potential in children and adolescents.

Participants taking the training program must already have a theoretical background as well as some training in the area of painting, music, theater and dance.

The degree in Art Education was recently introduced at an event held in the Fine Arts Institute in Santo Domingo and attended by directors of the National Institute for Training and Education of Teachers (INAFOCAM in Spanish) and the National System for Specialized Artistic Training (SINFAE in Spanish) and various national institutions involved in degree programs.

Regional and District Education Directors were invited to the event where they learned more about the content, objective and reach of this initiative and the role they will play in the selecting and motivating teachers.

Participants taking the training program must already have a theoretical background as well as some training in the area of painting, music, theater and dance.

Teachers must also develop expressive and art appreciation skills that will enable them to carry out artistic projects within the teaching/classsroom context, while taking into consideration the Dominican education curriculum.

Four modules will be offered toward the development and completion of this program: Art Education, Art Appreciation, Visual Art (Painting and Applied Arts) and Performance Art (Music, Theater and Dance). Other complementary activities are being considered including guided tours at major museums and other places of artistic interest, roundtables with renowned artists and presentations of performing art.

The event was headed by Deputy Education Minister for Pedagogical Services, Minerva Vincent; Director of INAFOCAM, Gineida Castillo Díaz; Director General of the Fine Arts Institute, Doctor Franklyn Domínguez; Domingo de los Santos Director of SINFAE and Elsa Sánchez, Director of INAFOCAM’s Continuing Education Program.

Minerva Vincent praised the efforts being made by INAFOCAM and SINFAE for developing this program which encourages teaching of art in the schools by a trained and specialized staff.
