Students from the Fabio Amiable Moat Polytechnic School in the Los Mina sector of Santo Domingo East won first prize in the VI Mercosur Educational-Cultural Meeting at the Festival of Science, Culture and Technological Innovation 2011 held in Posadas, Misiones Province, Argentina, from September 26 to 30.


The Dominican Republic and the Polytechnic school obtained first prize in this science fair for the second consecutive year, a confirmation of the quality and creative capacity of its students.


Daniel Mejía García, Cart Dhiji Féliz and Jessica Carolina Camejo submitted a project to the competition in the area of mechanical electronics entitled, “Alarm System with Movement Detection,” which was named the fair’s number one Research Project of Merit, based on the votes of the students and teachers in attendance.


The Dominican Republic and the Polytechnic school obtained first prize in this science fair for the second consecutive year, a confirmation of the quality and creative capacity of its students. Of the 26 projects presented in the fair, Dominican contestants won three awards.


The winning project is an alarm system that can detect movement within a radius of eight to ten meters. It also includes two illuminating lamps, a video camera that records computer images and a siren, which is activated several seconds afterward to sound the alarm against intruders.


The three Dominican students’ project were also praised by the Life and Sciences Civic Association and invited to participate next year, with registration fees waived, in the IV Interactive Science Encampment and the II Forum on Science and Civilization 2012 to be held in Cerritos in the Argentine province of Entre Rios.


The Dominican delegation also included Bienvenido Mercedes, academic director of the Polytechnic, and Professor Jesús Mercedes, head of its Mechanical Electronics section.


Participants at the science fair also came from Argentina (the host country), Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil.
