First Lady Dr. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández today inaugurated a Pediatric Emergency Room in the Taiwan 19 de Marzo Hospital of this province, built for the sum of DR$691,927.55, where children of the southern region will receive adequate quality health care in the hands of pediatric specialists.

With the construction of these Pediatric Emergency Rooms throughout the country, the First Lady hopes to reduce child mortality and provide adequate health care services for children of low-income families; children will receive personalized quality care at these centers where pediatric doctors and nurses are specially trained to work with children.

Addressing those present, Dr. Cedeño de Fernández said that these emergency rooms are designed, built and equipped to give children special services that differ from services for adults, when they suffer an unexpected situation that endangers their wellbeing.

“As a mother, I know the anguish one feels when a child gets sick, an anguish that is multiplied in the case of low-income families who must endure hardships in order to get treatment in precarious conditions in unfriendly spaces, where often the body is healed but the mind is injured in witnessing scenes typical in an adult emergency,” she stated.

The First Lady assured that the twelfth emergency room will remain open in this Hospital, which bears the name of the Republic of Taiwan, a country that is acknowledged for its continuing contributions to the welfare and progress of the Dominican people and which again made possible the construction of this important work.

She emphasized that the goal is to continue building Pediatric Emergency Rooms in different parts of the country in order to bring quality health services to families so that they do not have to delay care for their children due to a lack of money or transportation, thus avoiding complications in a child’s condition and prolonging healing time.
