A  group of  150 students from the Socorro Sánchez School enjoyed the performance given by Colombia´s Pombo Group at the Children´s Library of the Dominican Republic (BIJRD in Spanish).

Teresa Peralta, director of the Library; Carmenza Ovalle, Ambassador from Colombia and Eleanor Grimaldi, Dominican writer and representative of the Ministry of Culture gave the words of welcome and invited those in attendance to enjoy the presentation of the entertaining Pombo Group.


Colombian music, stories, manual workshops and colorful personalities inundated every corner of the Children’s Library as they used their artistic expression as a playful and participatory learning method which served as a way of enriching the imagination, creativity and wonder of each boy and girl.


During their visit to the BIJRD, the Pombo Group put on a part of its musical show, “El Libro Mágico de Pombo” (Pombo’s Magic Book) which will be performed in full on Wednesday October 3rd at the Palace of Fine Arts. In addition, the cast shared their performing skills with the young students through workshops on bodily expression, telling stories, creating characters with paper, among other things.


“Today, the Office of the First Lady, the Embassy of Colombia, Copa Airlines and the Ministry of Culture made it possible for all of you to see and enjoy this group of Colombians who came here to show you a world of magic, to entertain and to make us all very happy,” said Carmenza Ovalle, from the Colombian Embassy.


“El Libro Mágico de Pombo,” born out Pombo’s album, was produced by Carlos Vives and Carlos Iván Medina. The record won a Grammy award for best musical album for children. It also won a Shop Prize for best musical compilation.


The Rafael Pombo Foundation is a private, non-profit entity, created in Bogota, Colombia in 1985. Its activities involve working for the comprehension and education of children while providing a change in cultural attitudes, behavior and social values that are more sympathetic with children’s rights and well-being.


The central theme that articulates these activities and goals involves promoting a love of reading and development of creative thought. To date, the Foundation has helped more than 2 million children, the vast majority from the most vulnerable sectors of society.
