EThe President of the Republic, Leonel Fernandez, met with executives of the Business Association of the Telecommunications and Information sector (AMETIC), who proposed that the Dominican Republic becomes the market center for the distribution of goods and services for Latin America and the United States.

“These companies know that the Dominican Republic could become a welcome center for Spanish companies in terms of logistics, to distribute goods and services to markets in Latin America and the United States,”

The director general of the company, Jose Perez, said that in Spain there is a growing interest among local companies to establish themselves in the Dominican Republic for the purpose of taking advantage of the free trade agreements with Central America, the United States and Europe.

“These companies know that the Dominican Republic could become a welcome center for Spanish companies in terms of logistics, to distribute goods and services to markets in Latin America and the United States,” said Perez, director general of AMETIC, an association that brings together the leading companies in information technology, communications and electronics in his country.

Perez, who was accompanied by Antonio Fernandez, director of Digital Content, proposed to the Dominican President to develop investment projects in the areas of information technology and communications.

He said that, as a start, some 20 Spanish companies have the motivation to settle in the Dominican Republic to explore the markets in Central America, South America, and the United States, as reported by the Division of Information, Press and Publicity of the Presidency.

AMETIC represents more than five thousand companies in Spain and the business interests of 350 thousand employees and incorporates 7 percent of Spain’s Gross Domestic Product.

The business association also has a nonprofit foundation dedicated to training and the transmission of knowledge in their areas of expertise.

Perez explained that, in addition to generating jobs, the partnership aims at building intellectual capital capable of, in turn, creating new knowledge.

“This partnership has the most experience and it is the best politically-connected at the ministerial level, as it works with Spain’s Ministry of Industry,” said Antonio Fernandez.

AMETIC works in the area of associations, by bringing together companies from the electronics, commercial television receivers, audio and video equipment, support and storage devices, digital images and e-books, among others.

President Fernandez and his entourage arrived at the Barajas Airport, in Madrid, at 10 am local time (2 in the morning, Dominican time), and was welcomed by Dominican Ambassador Cesar Medina and Dominican Consul Marcos Cross.

On Friday morning the President is scheduled to meet with the Prisa group and with executives of the Fundación Ortega y Gasset. Also during his tour in Spain, the President will visit the city of Barcelona, ??where he will follow a busy work schedule.
