Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, 05/24/2011

The Directorate General of the Book Fair and the Ministry of Culture presented the book “Por el Cielo de las Islas,” part of the Dienteleche collection, before dozens of children and young people in attendance.

The Head of State stressed that the Dominican Republic is experiencing a period of macro-economic stability, institutional strengthening and has undergone appreciable advances in its judicial system which combine to make the nation propitious for safe and profitable investment.

The event was chaired by the Executive Director of the Book Fair, Pedro Antonio Valdez, who was accompanied by the Director of Books and Reading, Eleanor Grimaldi Silie, and authors Rita de Moya de Grimaldi and Anya Damiron.

The book is a collection for children of stories of the Hispanic Caribbean, by authors from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, and is coordinated by Pedro Antonio Valdez.

Among the stories that make up the book “Por el Cielo de las Islas” are: Las Carreteras del Cielo, Pasión por los Aviones (heaven’s roads, passion for airplanes); Arcoiris (rainbow); Polémica de las Estaciones (controversy of the seasons); En un Circo de Papel (in a cirque made of paper); and Rayitos de Sol (little sunbeams).

In his speech, Grimaldi Silie explained that children’s literature is a playful expression, which is closely related to pedagogy and is linked to aesthetics and ethics.

This new Dienteleche collection consists of imaginary children’s stories, which show great vitality. Its arguments are clearly put forward; and, direct language predominates, which allows the authors to recreate childhood experiences.

Author Rita de Moya de Grimaldi thanked the Ministry of Culture, Editora Union and the management of the Book Fair, for having allowed her to participate in this edition of Dienteleche.

Commenting on her story, de Moya said that “Las Carreteras del Cielo, Pasión por los Aviones (heaven’s roads, passion for airplanes), invites us to walk through life, take a tour of the values that make us better human beings, to set goals, achieve them, and discover what is good, without minding the cardinal point in which we find ourselves.”
