He led the architectural reconstruction of the Colonial City; among his main restorations are: the Museo de las Casas Reales (the Royal Museum), the Catedral Primada de América (the First American Cathedral), and the Alcázar de Colón (Columbus Alcazar).

The event was attended by Minister of Culture José Rafael Lantigua, the Director General of the Book Fair, Alejandro Arvelo; the deputy ministers of Culture, Mateo Morrison and Leopoldo Oviedo; the Commissioner of Culture in New York, Carlos Sanchez; the Deputy Minister of Education, Luis De Leon; and the Director of Literary Workshops, Valentin Amaro, among others.


Alexander Arvelo was the main speaker at the event and congratulated Perez Montas by saying that he “has not only made great contributions from the point of view of the restoration work which began in 1966, over 45 years ago, but also for his contributions to urban planning,” which are apparent in the main streets of the capital.


Perez Montas thanked “the honor that has been bestowed on me on this occasion,” and concluded “I take the occasion to express our delight to the Ministry of Culture and its staff for organizing this event with joy and pride.”


Eugenio Perez Montas is an architect and planner by profession. Since 1958 he has been a Professor of the History of Architecture and the Arts. He has undertaken extensive work in the field of architecture, of which we can highlight the restoration of historical monuments, and the development of urban areas and public parks.


Published works: Casas Coloniales de Santo Domingo (Santo Domingo’s Colonial Houses); La Ciudad del Ozama (Ozama City); 500 Años de Historia Urbana (500 Years of Urban History); La Hispaniola Colombiana en Arquitectura Colonial Iberoamericana (The Ibero-American Colonial Architecture of the Colombian Hispaniola); and El Patrimonio Monumental del Gran Caribe (Monumental Heritage of the Greater Caribbean), among others.
