Internal Revenue Office Introduces a Ranking of the ten Biggest Companies through Tax Contributions

The General Office of Internal Revenue (DGII) published a ranking of the 10 biggest Dominican companies, as measured by their income tax contributions to this office. The data figure in the “Ranking of companies 2011” by the DGII reveals the main companies based on the taxes to consumption and on income paid to the Treasury.


The fourth largest company in the DGII ranking is Brugal and Company and in 5th place is the León Jiménez Tobacco Industry.


The nucleus of the ten biggest companies is dominated, in terms of economic activity, by the petroleum, alcohol and telecommunications companies.  According to the ranking, the first company on the list is the Dominican Petroleum Refinery followed by Dominican National Beer in second place and the Dominican Telephone Company (CODETEL) in third place, according to information released by the DGII.


The fourth largest company in the DGII ranking is Brugal and Company and in 5th place is the León Jiménez Tobacco Industry. From there, the companies are as follows: Coastal Petroleum Dominicana, Orange Dominicana, Banco Popular, Esso Standard Oil and the Ambev Dominican Beer Company.


Three of the top ten companies that manufacture refined petroleum products and four alcoholic beverage and tobacco producers account for 78% of the taxes paid to the DGII. Meanwhile, 80% of taxes that benefit society and groups (ISR) from the second ranking were paid by communications companies, three banks and one power company.


DGII officials explained that the ranking was carried out in the interest of maintaining the public as well as specialists in general informed. It published this ranking under the criteria gathered by the taxes reported to the DGII.


This first ranking shows the positions of companies through their tax contributions based on the taxes to consumption and on income paid to the Tax Office. It also shows what was paid in ISR, income taxes, by the organizations and individuals for utilities.


 The companies that are in both rankings are concentrated in around 40% of the national tax collection total and belong to activities generated by Bancos Múltiples and an energy company.
