Exposición de la Artista Mónica Luza

Mónica Luza Art Exhibition
Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, 5/01/2011

Paintings by Peruvian artist Monica Luza will be on display from May 3-25 at the Los Remedos Chapel under the auspices of the German Embassy in Santo Domingo. The title of the show “TO THE PEOPLE OF SANTO DOMINGO,” is an allusion to a painting by German artist Blinky Palermo (Peter Heisterkamp), disciple of Joseph Beuys, called “To the People of New York.” Ms. Luza will transmit the spirit of Palermo’s work to a Caribbean atmosphere.  Los Remedios Chapel, built in 1541, is in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.

Mónica Luza, born in Peru, has lived and worked for the past 20 years in Berlin, Germany.  She began her studies at the School of Fine Arts in Lima, Peru then at the Städelsches Kunstinstitutin in Frankfurt del Meno and the University of Arts in Berlin.

Laura Gil, director of research at the Museum of Modern Art, wrote the following in the exhibition catalogue about Monica Luza’s work:

“The sensuality of the paintings is not so much their exuberance but rather their serene intensity. The geometric canvases establish silent pauses that alternate with fragments of landscape, Caribbean palms or long sandy beaches where a geometric shape, like a wall in the middle of a desert, alludes to the presence of the mystery in the heart of an infinite absence. Luza attributes meaning to purple, gold and the blue sky in the context of a sacred space that reveals an experience of the unnamable. The purity of the geometric form, the pure tension and color of the textile material communicates with the fragments of memory as pure objectivity.”
