Meeting of “Bibliophiles in the UASD” Gets Underway
Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo, 27/04/2011

With the goal of awakening an interest in reading, culture and national history in young people and university professionals, the Dominican Society of Bibliophiles (SDB in Spanish) announced that its upcoming meeting of “Bibliophiles in the UASD” will take place from this Thursday, April 28th to Saturday April 30th.

Throughout the three-day meeting, all interested participants will find a space for profession interchange, recreation and the acquisition of unique books.

SDB President, Mariano Mella, said the activity is being carried out in coordination with the Office of Culture of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the information section of the Pedro Mir Library.

Mr. Mella explained that this is the first time the SDB has sponsored an event of this type and that it will include an exhibition of literary work, cultural exchange, conferences and recognition of reading and special books.

This gathering is, in essence, a bibliophile exhibition under the slogan “Spreading Dominican Thought” which seeks to turn the UASD into a place for bibliophiles, or book lovers, and reading enthusiasts. They will be presenting valuable and historical book collections in all areas of knowledge.

Throughout the three-day meeting, all interested participants will find a space for profession interchange, recreation and the acquisition of unique books.

The Dominican Society of Bibliophiles is a private, not-for-profit organization founded in 1973 with the mission of promoting, preserving and disseminating books and Dominican culture.

The Bibliophiles have edited an important part of the classical literary work of the Dominican Republic creating the so-called “Dominican Culture Collection.”

The cultural labor of the SDB is not limited to the dissemination of books. Its work also includes maintaining the Enrique Apolinar Henríquez Library, founded in 1978, and which currently has a collection of around 15,000 books, among which are numerous about the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.

This library has become an important resource center for researchers, writers as well as national and international academics who often frequent it.
