Book Fair Colloquiums: Forty Six Scholars  and Intellectuals Will Take Part

A total of 9 panels on various topics selected by the organizers of the International Book Fair will make up the Colloquium Cycle of the XIV International Book Fair of Santo Domingo which will open on May 4th.


The colloquiums are the intellectual heart of the Book Fair since they began in 1997. After each Book Fair Colloquium Cycle, the papers and analyses are put together in a book for the following year.

The first colloquium, Friday May 6th, will focus on “The Evangelization: 500 Years Later.” Scholars and experts offering analysis include Monsignor Lorenzo Vargas, José Báez Guerrero, José del Carmen Ariza and Rosa Krawinkel, along with Listín Diario director, Miguel Franjul who will be the moderator.


“The Anti-Trujillo Resistance: The Effects of the Struggle,” is the title of the second colloquium which will be held on Tuesday May 10th. Participants include Porfirio Rodríguez, Carmen Imbert Brugal, Delio Gómez Ochoa and Tomasina (Sina) Cabral. The moderator will be Raúl Pérez Peña.


“Mario Vargas Llosa – His Work and Us” is the third and will take place on Wednesday May 11th with Lourdes Camilo de Cuello, Armando Almánzar Rodríguez, Altagracia Pou y Freddy Ginebra. Writer, Edwin Disla will be the moderator.


The fourth topic “Religious Art in the Dominican Republica” will take place on Friday May 13th. Panelists will be María Elena Ditrén, César Iván Feris Iglesias, Amable López Meléndez, Virginia Roca and Marianne de Tolentino. Rafael Emilio Yunén will moderate.


Víctor Gómez Bergés, Rafael Marion-Landais and Cristiana Aguiar will talk about “Historical Relations between the Holy See and the Dominican State.”  Manuel Morales Lama will moderate this, the fifth colloquium to be held on Monday, May 16th.


The sixth colloquium will look at “Sacred Music: The Dominican Component” with Rafael Solano, José Delmonte Peguero, Carlos Andrés Mejía and Father César Hilario as Professor Bernarda Jorge moderates on Tuesday May 17th.


Bruno Rosario Candelier, Johanna Goede and Odalís G. Pérez will be part of the seventh colloquium on “Dominican Religious Poetry.” Ofelia Berrido will moderate on Wednesday May 18th.


The eighth colloquium, to be held on Thursday May 19th, will focus on
 “The Trujillo Dictatorship Fifty Years Later.” Scholars include Miguel Guerrero, Eduardo García Michel, Fernando Infante, Mu-kien Sang Ben and Bernardo Vega. The writer, Ligia Minaya Belliard, will be the moderator.


The colloquium cycle of the International Book Fair will end on Friday May 20th with papers presented by Monsignor Antonio Camilo, Francisco Paredes, Luis Emilio Montalvo Arzeno, Octavio Figueroa and Father Mario Serrano, on the topic “Influence of Catholic Thought in Dominican History.” The moderator will be David Alvarez Martín.


This Colloquium Cycle of the Book Fair will begin at 8 pm on each of the dates indicated in the Juan Lockward Bar of the Eduardo Brito National Theater. The General Coordinator of the colloquiums is the writer Juan Freddy Armando.


The XIV International Book Fair of Santo Domingo 2011 will take place between May 4 and 22 in Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza. This year’s Guest of Honor is the Vatican. This year’s Book Fair is dedicated to Monsignor Francisco J. Arnaiz and Father José Luis Sáez, in commemoration of the 500 years since the constitution of the Diocese of Santo Domingo and La Vega.
