In its continuing efforts to reach out to the Dominican community in NYC, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) will be hosting a film screening of The Republic of Baseball: The Dominican Giants of the American Game,by Dan Manatt at the School of Visual Arts’ Beatrice Theatre on April 16, 2011 at 7:00PM.

The movie documents the tale of the first great baseball superstars from the Dominican Republic — Felipe Alou, Juan Marichal, Manny Mota, and Ozzie Virgil — and how they overcame poverty and dictatorship at home and racism in the United States on their way to greatness in the Major Leagues.

The screening will be followed by a discussion and cocktail reception with great major leaguers past and present including free agent pitcher, Pedro Martínez and hall of famer Juan Marichal to discuss their own personal journeys and momentous achievements in their illustrious careers.

GFDD also serves as an intermediary to foster networking, knowledge sharing and professional exchange between Dominican professionals working in the US, students, and the Diaspora at large.

The objectives are:

  • To promote a positive understanding of the rich and diverse Dominican Culture and identity.
  • To enjoy and celebrate Dominican arts, creativity and artists.
  • To create a space to come together and raise awareness about issues and situations affecting today’s DR community, and offering solutions.
  • To network and exchange ideas and experiences.
  • To strengthen Diaspora ties with the DR, as well as its host country and to promote better understanding amongst each other.
  • To provide the opportunity to link to other DR institutions and like-minded organizations in the US.
