“In the Time of the Butterflies,” presented in Spanish with live simultaneous English translation, tells the story of the Mirabal sisters (Dedé, Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa) of the Dominican Republic. The Mirabal sisters helped form resistance cells across the country against the dictatorship of General Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. The “Butterflies”, their secret code name, “were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960.

Based on the popular novel by Julia Alvarez, the martyrs are portrayed in a warm and dramatic production by the talented duo -playwright Charity Svich and director Jose Zayas …

The price of tickets for “In the Time of the Butterflies” start at $25 and sits may be booked through the Internet at: www.repertorio.org/butterflies; by phone at: 1-212-225-9999; or in person at Repertorio Español (Spanish Repertory Theater) located at 138 East 27th Street in Manhattan, New York, between Lexington and Third Avenues (Sunday through Thursday from 9am-7pm, and Friday through Saturday from 9am-9pm).
 
Based on the popular novel by Julia Alvarez, the martyrs are portrayed in a warm and dramatic production by the talented duo -playwright Charity Svich and director Jose Zayas- responsible for the critically acclaimed “The House of the Spirits”, by Isabel Allende, in 2009. Through video projections and digital animation, the production immerses the viewer in an unforgettable theatrical experience which, as in a dream, shows the inner life of these activist sisters, the beauty and ferocity of the world in which they lived, and the meringue music that played on the airwaves at the time.
