Global Foundation for Democracy and Development Launches New Monthly Series, “The Global Roundtable,” in Partnership with South-South News

On Tuesday, January 31st, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) will launch its new monthly series, “The Global Roundtable,” in partnership with South-South News. The objective of the program is to promote dialogue on issues of international concern. Each broadcast will feature a discussion with a prominent international figure. The first of the series will highlight H.E. Alexandru Cujba, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations and former Vice President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.


The first session will take a look at the steps being taken by the Republic of Moldova to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and other international development targets.


The program seeks to inform GFDD and South-South News viewership of innovative initiatives taking place in each of the countries being spot-lighted …and GFDD and South-South News are looking for your participation. Send us your questions for Ambassador Cujba.

ABOUT MOLDOVA

Since its independence from the USSR in 1991, the country has been able to achieve a great deal in terms of macroeconomic and financial stability. From 2000 to 2005, the country was able to increase GDP by 43%, which translated into a 41.3% reduction in poverty.

The Republic of Moldova is presently a member state of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and Black Sea for Economic Cooperation. The development of bilateral and multilateral relations with EU member states is of high importance as integration with the European Union remains a top priority.

Incorporation within the energetic sector of South Eastern Europe is also a critical goal for the country. The Republic of Moldova presently has observer status under the Europe Energy Community Treaty. The European State seeks to obtain full membership under the treaty.

The country’s main economic sectors are wine, agriculture, tourism and telecommunications. In 2009, the Republic of Moldova gained the distinction of being the first country in the world to provide high-definition voice services for mobile phones.
