Dominican Republic Received 3.7 Million Tourists from January to October This Year

The number of passengers entering the country by air between January and October of this year rose to 3,799,871, which represents an increase of 4.26%, or equivalent to 155,192 more tourists as compared to the same period on 2009.

According to the a report released by the Central Bank about the flow of tourists between January and October 2010, these results have surpassed the 1.15% decline registered last year at this time for the same number of months. The report indicated that this sustained growth in passenger arrivals is influenced by the non-resident segment, equivalent to 3.55% or in absolute terms, 116,960 additional visitors, which surpasses last year’s decline of 36,993 passengers registered during the same period.

Likewise, the report pointed out that trips being made by Dominican residents have also increased by 11.07% which in absolute terms is 38,232 more than last year at the same time. This indicates that in October alone, the Dominican Republic experienced a 7.79% increase in non-resident passengers, equivalent to 17,866 additional tourists from the year before.

According to the Central Bank report, this behavior is explained in large part by the increase of non-resident tourists, 17,205 additional tourists over the period analyzed, which translates into a variation of 9.05% in comparison with last year. Dominican non-resident tourists increased by 1.68%.
In analyzing the profile of the tourists who visit the DR, it has been observed that 87.31% stayed in hotels during their visit here. When asked the purpose of their visit, 91 out of 100, responded “recreation.”
