Dominican President Leonel Fernández, thanked the government of Taiwan for the nearly $2.8 million dollar donation to be used for the upcoming National Population and Housing Census to be carried out between November 24-30.

Speaking on behalf of President Fernández at a press conference at the National Palace, Temístocles Montás, Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, thanked the Taiwanese government for its economic collaboration with the Dominican government and revealed the amount of the donation, according to the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.


Mr. Montás said President Leonel Fernández greatly appreciated this generous gesture of over $2.8 million dollars from Taiwan, which is earmarked to carry out the last phase of the National Population and Housing Census for 2010 which is regarded as an instrument for national development.


“I can tell you in all honesty that without this support from Taiwan, we would not have been able to carry out this last phase of the Census,” Montás said, adding that the collaboration will contribute to development in the Dominican Republic.


Montás recognized the Taiwanese government saying that, to a large degree, this Census was made possible thanks to the generous contribution and solidarity shown by the people of Taiwan.


He reported that this third donation from the Taiwanese government for the National Population and Housing Census 2010 brought to total to over $6 million dollars.


From his part, the honorable Taiwanese Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Isaac Tsai, said the ninth National Population and Housing Census is another step in the direction of fulfilling the project of national development promoted by President Leonel Fernández as it facilitates the public administration to work with reliable and updated sources of information, necessary to continue with the process of broadening its public policies that promote development for all Dominicans.
Pablo Tactuk, Director of the National Statistics Office, also thanked the Taiwanese authorities for the contribution to his office for the benefit of the Dominican government and people.


This donation is part of the Cooperation Agreement signed on December 8, 2009 by Dominican Minister Montás and Taiwanese Ambassador Tsai
