Dominican President Leonel Fernández will travel on Tuesday to New York to participate in the United Nations General Assembly meeting as well as the Summit on the Millennium Development Goals.


During his stay in the United States, President Fernández will hold various bilateral meetings with other Heads of States. He will also attend university conferences and meetings with executives of private firms…


During his stay in the United States, President Fernández will hold various bilateral meetings with other Heads of States. He will also attend university conferences and meetings with executives of private firms and international banking organizations, according to the Presidential Office of Information, Press and Publicity.


Fernández will leave the DR on a private jet from the San Isidro Air Force base at midday on Tuesday September 21and will arrive to New York in the late afternoon of the same day. Upon arrival, he will speak at the UN about the Millennium Development Goals. Following that speech he will meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. This same day, Fernández will hold a conference on “Educational Revitalization in the Dominican Republic,” at the Community College.


He will hold meetings on Tuesday with Jordan´s King Abdullah at the Oriental Mandarin Hotel then later with Andrés Gluski, Executive Vice President of the AES Corporation and Andrew Vesey, President for Latin America and Africa for the AES.


The Dominican leader will meet with the Dean of New York University’s School of Law, Richard Revesz and director of the Inter-American Development Bank, Luis Alberto Moreno. He will visit William Paterson University later in the afternoon.


President Fernández will participate on Thursday in the Plenary Session of the United Nations General Assembly Meeting which will open with an address by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon followed by the Presidents of Brazil, the United States, Switzerland, Pakistan, Costa Rica, Turkey, Qatar, Kenya, Peru, Canada and China, among others.


After bilateral meetings with various world leaders and heads of governments, including the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, on Thursday afternoon President Fernández will address the UN General Assembly.


That night, Fernández and First Lady Margarita Cedeño, will take part in the “Clinton Global Citizens Awards” at the Sheraton Hotel in New York City.


Between Friday September 24 to Sunday the 26th, Fernández’s busy agenda in New York includes meetings with the Jewish-American Congress, a work meeting with the Council on Foreign Relations, a conference at the Museo del Barrio, a meeting with the Derivative Reform Alliance and a press conference.


 Visits to Other States


President Fernández’s US trip includes visits to other places including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco in California then Texas, Chicago and Boston.


On Sunday the 26th, he will travel to San Diego to meet with the city’s Mayor and local businesspeople. On Monday the 27th, he’ill visit the University of California and give lecture titled “Does Latin American and Caribbean Democracy Work?” Following the lecture, he will meet with the university’s professors and board members of the Institute of the Americas.


In Los Angeles, President Fernández will meet with congress people and with the Rector of UCLA where he will also give a lecture. After that, the president will visit Warner Brothers then take a tour of the technology lab at Cal Tech.


On Tuesday the 28th, the Dominican president will go to the Culver Studios then travel later in the day to San Francisco where to meet with California’s Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.


On Wednesday, the President plans to sign an agreement with France Telecom to open a IDSP/Orange/Blackberry Center in the Dominican Republic’s Cyber Park. At midday, he’ll take part in a work meeting with representatives of various international companies.


That evening, he will travel to Austin, Texas where he has meetings scheduled for Thursday with directors of Dell, Global Workplace and Strategic Growth. He will also visit the University of Texas, where he will sign an important cooperation agreement.


Fernández is scheduled to meet with the president of the University of Texas, Larry Faulkner, Austin’s Mayor, Lee Leffingwell, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Austin.


Following those meetings, Fernández will meet with the Governor of Texas, Rick Perry. That same afternoon, he will visit the Texas International Education Consortium.


President Fernández will be in Chicago and Boston from October 1-3 where he will meet authorities and rectors of various universities. On the night of December 3rd, the President will return to the Dominican Republic
