Dominican President Leonel Fernández met with US Deputy Secretary for Population, Refugees and Immigration Affairs, Eric P. Schwartz in his office at the National Palace.

Mr. Schwartz, who called the hour-long meeting “productive,” referred to President Fernandez as a great friend of the United States.

He said they talked about issues related to the efforts underway on the part of the US government to help Haiti, according to the President´s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.

Schwartz commented that the Dominican Republic has had a leadership role in the reconstruction of Haiti with its outstanding humanitarian efforts.

The US offficial said the DR demonstrated compassion in its outpouring of assistance to the Haitian people who desperately needed help after the devastating January 12 earthquake.
