The Dominican Republic showed off its latest tourism attractions at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR 2010) in Madrid at its 270- square-meter stand which was one of the most visited pavilions among the Latin American countries at the entire 4-day fair.

Dominican Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier García, inaugurated the colorful pavilion on the first day of the fair which was attended by Spain’s King and Queen who called for a moment of silence for the victims of Haiti’s earthquake, according to the Office of Press and Communication of the Tourism Ministry (SECTUR).

Mr. García Fernández announced that SECTUR will maintain its current promotion and publicity levels in the European, US and Latin American markets while increasing its focus on Eastern Europe.


The Tourism Minister highlighted the excellent relationship his ministry has developed with the Dominican press has become an instrument with which to highlight and support the country’s tourism industry.


García Fernández said that a result of these good relations with the press, members of the media are invited to the most important international tourism fairs in the world which gives them a view of the work done by the government through the Tourism Ministry and how it works to position the Dominican Republic as the main host for international visitors in the Caribbean region.


FITUR, now in its 30th year, opened Wednesday and ended on Sunday January 24 at the IFEMA Convention Center in Madrid. The Fair attracted more than 12,000 international exhibitors from 170 countries and 136,000 visitors and more than 8,000 journalists from around the world.


During this exhibition of the world’s tourism attractions, several organizations participated in the Dominican pavilion including the National Association of Hotels and Restaurants (ASONAHORES), the VIK Hotel Group, Oasis Hotels & Resorts, Viva Wyndham Resort, Hola Tours, Casa de Campo, Fiesta Hotel Group, Intercontinental V Centenary, Holiday Inn Santo Domingo, BTC, Banco Popular and the Cisneros Foundation.
