Executive Office Declares Two Days of National Mourning


The Executive Office declared two days of National Mourning for the tragedy facing Haiti where thousands of people lost their lives as a result of the earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince on Tuesday.

Citing Decree number 29-10, President Leonel Fernández declared the flag to be flown at half staff on January 15 and 16. All official activities scheduled to be held at all public buildings, including national and municipal centers, are suspended during this time.

The Presidential decree states that the earthquake in Haiti has caused the loss of thousands of lives in Port-au-Prince, the total destruction of numerous government buildings and hundreds of commercial and private homes.

It also expresses profound sympathy on the part of the Dominican people in the face of this tragedy and considers it the moral obligation to show solidarity to this neighboring country and its people.
