Dominican and French governments reached an agreement to create a high level academic cooperation program wherein universities and higher education institutes from both countries will participate.


Both parties agreed to develop and strengthen their educational and scientific cooperation in higher education as well as high level research, postgraduate studies…


The protocol of understanding, reached by Foreign Ministers and Education Ministers from both governments, seeks to broaden each country’s current scholarship program to benefit a larger number of low-income Dominican students, facilitating their education in various fields, according to the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.

Both parties agreed to develop and strengthen their educational and scientific cooperation in higher education as well as high level research, postgraduate studies and Master’s degrees in the areas of social and human sciences, health science, agronomy, environmental studies and the study of the French language.

President Leonel Fernández, along with Ligia Amada Melo, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology and , Laura Faxas, Dominican Ambassador in France, held a meeting on Friday with representatives from the prestigious universities participating in the agreement.

The French universities involved in the accord include the Pantheon-Sorbonne, Sciences Po-París, Montpellier, París X, París I, París III, National Institute for Applied Sciences and Paris II among others.

Dominican Participants in the discussion for the agreement included Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso and Ligia Amado Melo, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology. Signing the agreement for the French government, were Ministers of the State of Cooperation and Francophonie, Alain Joyandet and Valerie Precresse, from Higher Education and Research.

DOMINICAN COMMUNITY MEETING

On Friday night, the Dominican President concluded his scheduled activities in this country with a meeting of Dominican residents of France, held at the Dominican Embassy. President Fernández was accompanied by Laura Faxas, Dominican Ambassador in France; Ligia Amada Melo, Temístocles Montás, Luis Manuel Bonetti, Max Puig and businesspeople Félix García, Manuel Alejandro Grullón, Frank Jorge Elías, Alejandra Liriano, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

On Saturday, the Dominican head of state will fly to New York on a commercial flight where he will follow a private schedule until Monday when he returns home to his country.
