Fashion Propels the DR as Tourism and Cultural Destination

The Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) has invited 30 journalists from the most prestigious media outlets in Europe and America to cover the fashion show being prepared by the internationally famous designer Carolina Herrera. The event is part of Dominican Fashion 2009 to be held this week at the Ambassador Hotel.


Ms. Herrera will show her designs on Saturday October 24 in a benefit event for the various breast cancer prevention programs developed by the Office of the Dominican First Lady Margarita Cedeño de Fernández.


This project is taking place as part of SECTUR’s policies being implemented to project Santo Domingo as a city with lots of international tourism attractions, according to a press release from the ministry’s Office of Press and Communications.

Ms. Herrera will show her designs on Saturday October 24 in a benefit event for the various breast cancer prevention programs developed by the Office of the Dominican First Lady Margarita Cedeño de Fernández.

Prior to this activity, Carolina Herrera will maintain a tight schedule while in the DR. She will meet with artists, craftspeople and visit tourism spots of interest, among other things.

As part of this project – coordinated by Montserrat Despradel, director of the Congresses and Incentives Department of SECTUR – Spanish magazine Marie Claire will do a extensive report on the natural beauty of the DR and will also do a special fashion photo session along one of the country’s coastlines.

International media expected to attend the event include Glamour Magazine, Elle Magazine, The Washington Post, Stile.com, New York Post, Caras Magazine, Clarín Newspaper, Fashion TV International, Foc Channel’s Collections TV, El Mercurio Newspaper, Televisa Publisher’s Caras Magazine, Zoomer Magazine, the National Post, Univision TV, the Miami Herald and Vanities Magazine. In addition, Vogue Magazine, El Comercio Newspaper, No Flash Magazine, El Universal Newspaper, Yo Dona Magazine, Marie Claire y American Magazine.

To guarantee the success of this project, the Ministry of Tourism developed a wide-reaching work strategy with related departments so that the Dominican Republic can be adequately represented as the number one tourism destination in the Caribbean.

Dominican Fashion 2009 is one of the most important annual events held in the DR. It attracts hundreds of foreign visitors, among them designers, make-up artists, hairdressers and fashion business moguls. The event also attracts thousands of viewers.
