The Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) recently announced the opening of a Planning and Projects Office in the municipality of Cabrera to promote the development of tourism and to relaunch this area as a new vacation spot in the Dominican Republic.

“Cabrera has visual and tourist attractions like no other region in the country. For that reason, the relaunch of this area will involve an alliance with the private sector…”

In a meeting with investors and community officials, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García Fernández announced the construction of a 1,500 meter-long malecon (seafront promenade) adjacent buildings, and a space to be used as a recreation center for residents and visitors to the community, according to a press release from SECTUR’s Office of Press and Communications.

The Ministry is also committed to mediate with government authorities in the areas of water and electricity, among others, to assure that they will invest in these areas so that Cabrera will have the necessary services to develop its tourism industry.

“Cabrera has visual and tourist attractions like no other region in the country. For that reason, the relaunch of this area will involve an alliance with the private sector, government authorities, town councils and organizations from civil society,” he said.

Meeting in the Villa Rebecca MacDonald, a community located in the Orchid Bay Tourism Project, said the Ministry of Tourism is working with a vision to promote planned tourism development.

“The idea is that the structure and infrastructure are done with the proper planning for which, at the moment, we are asking our Planning and Projects Department to open an office in this city in order to proceed with a tourism development plan for this area,” he said.

Mr. García Fernández asked the architect Maribel Villalona, Director of the Planning and Projects Department (DPP), to undertake a complete and quick study which will include tourism infrastructure needs for the Cabrera municipality. He added that the DPP will be provided with the necessary resources to invest in the construction that is deemed necessary to launch this area as a tourism zone.

Others present at the meeting with the Tourism Minister included Canadian businesswoman Rebecca MacDonald; tourism investors Sheila Jacob and Nelson Tejada; community syndicate official, Jorge Hugo Cavoli; President of the Tourism Commission of the Puerto Rican House of Representatives, Iván Rodríguez; Governor of the Provice, Arístides Victoria as well as Luis Sosa Eve and Luis Toral Córdova.

The Tourism Ministry team was made up of Deputy Minister for the Northern Region, Cesar José de los Santos; personal assistant, José Gabriel García and Maribel Villalona, Director of the Planning and Projects Department (DPP).
