If your summer plans fell through or you waited until the last minute to start looking for an internship, don’t despair. We have an opportunity for you! InteRDom invites you to get involved in the Dominican Republic without even having to travel. Through InteRDom you can apply for a summer internship starting immediately in the New York office of InteRDom’s sponsoring organization, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD).


This summer intern will be working on content development, conducting research and providing contextual information on the Dominican Republic for the Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment.


About the Internship


The intern will have the opportunity to gain professional experience and contribute to the research and writing of a comprehensive encyclopedic dictionary, the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment, initially launched online at /DiccionarioMedioAmbiente, and with the principal goal of creating a live and interactive forum, which will eventually culminate in a final printed version to be published at the end of 2009. The internship will be based in the New York City office, and will be supervised by the Environmental Projects Coordinator.


The Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment, a project dedicated to international as well as national audiences, aims to offer the most up-to-date and comprehensive information on the environment and natural resources of the Dominican Republic. Additionally it will highlight existing legislation concerning environmental protection and present projects launched by the public, private and nongovernmental sectors related to the environment.


By bringing together information on diverse areas such as biodiversity, sustainable development, forestry, climate, pollution, land use, natural resources and environmental legislation, management and education, the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment will provide an excellent forum for promoting multi- disciplinary interaction, disseminating scientific information and promoting awareness of and concern for the environment.


This summer intern will be working on content development, conducting research and providing contextual information on the Dominican Republic for the Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment.


Intern Roles & Responsibilities include:



  • Compiling information on the Dominican Republic in diverse areas such as terrestrial and aquatic habitats, costal zones, natural resources, environmental legislation, biodiversity, pollution, urbanization, sustainable development, and watershed systems.
  • Writing of articles, fact sheets and adding contextual information on the Dominican Republic to terms defined within the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment.
  • Obtaining rights to use information, links and relevant resources for the online as well as printed version of the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment.
  • Updating news relating to the environment on current projects, new initiatives, funding, and reports released by public, private and nongovernmental organizations in the Dominican Republic.
  • Ensuring information is updated online in a timely manner.

Requirements to Apply



  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Excellent research and Spanish writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision and as part of a team for extended periods of time.
  • Basic knowledge in biological sciences highly desired, applicants must have reached at least a sophomore level in an environmental education, biology, ecology, geology, or other natural science degree program.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are much appreciated.
