“Del fondo de la noche” or “In the Depth of the Night,” is a docudrama which connects the lives of Patricia, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, with the night Rafael Leonidas Trujillo was ambushed and assassinated. The film opened on Sunday March 1st at a private function in the Mauricio Báez Club.

Honorary president of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), and President of the Dominican Republic, Doctor Leonel Fernández, attended the premiere along with a large part of the Mirabal family.

The one-hour feature film, produced by FUNGLODE, will be shown at the National Cinematheque in Santo Domingo as well as at UASD auditoriums in Santiago, Puerto Plata, Higüey and Nagua throughout the month of March.

The film, honored with the Jury Award at the Philadelphia Documentary & Fiction Festival 2008,was made by a team of well-known Dominican and Spanish film professionals. Javier Balaguer directed the film; the script was written by Rafael Sarró and the Director of Photography was Claudio Chea.

The film mixes documentary footage with dramatization of events. Eighty percent of the film was shot in the traditional way with actors while the remainder uses archival footage, photographs and other historical documentation. The filming was done in four weeks, all of which took place in the Dominican Republic.

Opening Night

The film, which owes its title to several verses of the poem “There is a Country in the World,” by poet laureate Pedro Mir, opened as a fundraiser in a private function at the Mauricio Báez Club.

Money raised will finance educational programs at the Institute of Global Media (IGM) which forms part of FUNGLODE and its sister organization, the Global Foundation Democracy and Development (GFDD).

IGM is developing a comprehensive audiovisual training program with a special emphasis on TV and film production. Its associates in the production of educational programs include the Cuba’s International School for Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, New York University’s Opportunity Programs and One Race Films.
