UNESCO launches a series of publications to provide information for the teachers of Latin America and the Caribbean

In order to assist teachers to strengthen achievements and overcome the difficulties detected in the Second Regional Comparative and Explanatory Study (SERCE), the Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education (LLECE), coordinated by UNESCO Santiago, will launch the series “Contributions to Teaching” in the Dominican Republic.

Their content is the result of the evaluation of the achievements of around 200,000 students in the third and sixth grades of primary education in the 16 countries

The publications are devoted to reading, mathematics and natural sciences and present theoretical and practical elements that can help teachers strengthen and improve their teaching practices in these subjects. Their content is the result of the evaluation of the achievements of around 200,000 students in the third and sixth grades of primary education in the 16 countries and the Mexican state of Nuevo León that participated in the SERCE.

For this reason LLECE took the lead and published these texts, not only by way of compensation for the teachers of the nine thousand classrooms that were part of the sample but also as a contribution to all the teachers in the region. Each text provides a brief description of the SERCE study and outlines the specific information of the area under study. This is followed by a presentation of the theoretical framework on which the evaluations were based, in line with current teaching trends and the evaluation of the area in question, as well as the characteristics of the tests.

Finally, regional and country data are provided, accompanied by pedagogical interpretations that recount the students’ achievements and difficulties, as well as the possible reasons from a teaching and learning point of view.

The presentation of “Contributions to Teaching” will take place within the context of the XXIV Meeting of Coordinators of LLECE, where an analysis will be made of the impact of the SERCE, the results of which were make known in June 2008, as well as the structure of the Third Regional Comparative and Explanatory Study (TERCE).

The meeting will be complemented by a Regional Seminar on the Quality of Education, supported by UNESCO Havana and the State Secretariat for Education of the Dominican Republic.
