President Fernández To Inaugurate Santo Domingo’s First Metro Line on Thursday

President Leonel Fernández will inaugurate the first complete Metro Line in Santo Domingo. The celebratory act will take place on Thursday at the Heroes Center Station at 5 pm. 

Santo Domingo’s first Metro line consists of 16 stations spanning a length of 14.5 kilometers, 57 train cars and 19 train lines.

After undergoing a series of tests, the Santo Domingo Metro was approved overwhelmingly by those who tested and rode the train since it began to function last February 27 when its first ride was also attended by the President.  In the month of December alone, more than 2 million people used the new mass transit service.

Prior to its inauguration, the system was submitted to a total technical revision carried out by advisors from Madrid’s Metro system and Dominican engineers. The Metro system, built with cutting edge technology, is expected to serve up to 175,000 riders per day.

Santo Domingo’s first Metro line consists of 16 stations spanning a length of 14.5 kilometers, 57 train cars and 19 train lines. The system runs North to South due to the fact that the majority of passengers are from the Municipality of Northern Santo Domingo.

Each of the Metro stations will carry the name of an important person in Dominican cultural and political history such as Professor Juan Bosch, Pedro Livio Cedeño, Gregorio Luperón, Peña Batlle, Mamá Tingó, Amín Abel, Casandra Damirón, Joaquín Balaguer and José Francisco Peña Gómez.

In addition, stations will be named after Francisco Caamaño,  Gregorio A. Gilbert, the Mirabal Sisters, Máximo Gómez, Los Taínos, Los Guarícanos, the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center and the Heroes Center (the Fair), where a large number of government offices are located.
