About GFDD

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) is a private, not-for-profit and non-partisan institution dedicated to promoting the collaboration between foreign and international organizations and the Dominican Republic, with the purpose of carrying out studies and research, raising the level of public understanding and opinion, designing public strategies and policies, offering educational and professional training programs and implementing development and exchange programs in areas critical to the social, economic and democratic development of the Dominican Republic, the Caribbean and all Latin America.

Brief History
The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) is a sister institution of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), headquartered in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. FUNGLODE was created by Dr. Leonel Fernández in 2000, at the end of his first presidency. GFDD was incorporated under the laws of the United States in 2002 with the goal of increasing and broadening the international presence and visibility of FUNGLODE and more specifically, of reinforcing ties of collaboration and exchange with U.S. institutions. FUNGLODE and GFDD were conceived and established by President Fernández as a result of his desire to continue contributing to the social, economic and democratic development of the Dominican Republic and the entire Region from an apolitical structure with an innovative calling and international reach. After acting as president of FUNGLODE and GFDD, and due to his election as the President of the Dominican Republic in 2004, Dr. Fernández assumed the position of Honorary President of the institution.

 Mission
The mission of GFDD is to identify relevant themes and create alliances with international associates to then formulate and execute initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable socio-economic development and strengthening the democracy of the Dominican Republic and all Latin America. GFDD establishes, cultivates and strengthens ties of collaboration and exchange among the entities and general public of the Dominican Republic, residing in the country and abroad, and the rest of the Western Hemisphere.

Vision
Our vision is to strengthen the democratic institution and the complete sustainable socio-economic development of the Dominican Republic and Latin America through an integral and inclusive process of modernization that allows the country and the region to successfully face the challenges of the 21st century.
