Dominican Actor/Director Fausto Rojas Featured in Theater Production of “La Pasión Cantada de Jacobito de Lara”

Santo Domingo, April 25, 2019 – The renowned Dominican director and actor Fausto Rojas returns to the local theater by participating as the lead actor in the play “La Pasión Cantada de Jacobito de Lara” (The Passion Song of Jacobito de Lara, unofficial translation), written and directed by playwright Radhamés Polanco. The play will run from May 10 to 12 in Santo Domingo’s Palace of Fine Arts.

Local actors Yanela Hernández, Luvil González and Ernesto Báez will also participate in this production, which tells the story of a controversial figure in Dominican history. After participating in the assassination of Dominican dictator Ulises –Lilís- Heureaux, de Lara finds himself involved in events that eventually lead to his death months later.

The technical team is headed by renowned Dominican stage designer Fidel López, costumer designer María Ester – Merethé – Ferreira, and lighting by Rubén Lara. The play’s executive producer is Ellen C. Pérez and overall artistic production is Fausto Rojas.

“La pasión cantada de Jacobito de Lara” will run from May 10 through 12 at the Palace of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo. Curtain call on Friday and Saturday will be 8:30 p.m., and on Sunday at 6:30 pm. Tickets sales (RD$500 p/p) are available at the Fine Arts Palace and in Uepa Tickets.

Fausto Rojas has been distinguished with multiple local awards, including the Dominican equivalent of the Oscars for his various productions. He was also named Director of the Year in 2018 by the Association of Art Reporters.

“La Pasión Cantada de Jacobito de Lara” was first presented this year in a special event held at the country’s Central Bank auditorium. The play received tremendous reviews. The play is based on a novel written Ellen Pérez, and the interview in prison was based on an interview published in Dominican newspaper Listin Diario in 1901 by journalist Virginia Elena Ortea.

Synopsis:

“La Pasión Cantada de Jacobito de Lara” represents the last few months of the life of this historic figure who, after participating in the assassination of dictator Ulises Heureaux in the late 19th century, a short time later he murdered his girlfriend Emilia Michel in the town’s plaza. He was sentenced and sent to jail at the Fort of San Felipe, in the north coast city of Puerto Plata, where he is interviewed by journalist Virginia Elena Ortea for the local newspaper Listin Diario. A short time after the interview he committed suicide with a gun he had managed to smuggle into his cell.
