Office of the Vice President Announces 8th Reading Olympics in Honor of Professor Juan Bosch

Santo Domingo, June 8, 2018 – The Office of the Vice President, through the Children and Youth Library of the Dominican Republic (BIJRD), announces the opening of the Reading Olympics 2018 in honor of Professor Juan Bosch. Registration deadline is June 29, 2018.

The initiative, sponsored by Vice President Dr. Margarita Cedeño, has as its most important goal to encourage reading and writing habits among the younger population. At the same time, promote the ethics and values of Professor Juan Bosch.

Along with the works of Professor Bosch, participants will also have access to the works of Dominican writers Virgilio Díaz Grullón, Pedro Peix, Jeannette Miller, René del Risco Bermúdez and other important national and international writers.

Participants must read the works of the abovementioned authors and participate in the reading discussions that will be led by instructors in the assigned reading halls, such as the My Space and The Children’s Library halls. At the same time, participants must write a summary of the text read as well as other pertinent information related to the book. Later, the assigned instructors will ask questions to determine if the participants understood the texts and listen to their opinion on the books read.
The winners will be those participants who write and present the largest number of summaries, where they must include the characters, the plot, the period where the events take place, the author, as well as other details.

The Reading Olympics is held every June 30th to commemorate the birth of Juan Bosch, one of the country’s most prolific writers and politicians. It is a way of celebrating his life and legacy in favor of Dominican literature.
The winners in each category will receive books, laptop computers, tablets and certificates of participation.
Contest Rules

Participants must be between seven and 18 years of age. There will be four categories for the following age groups: seven to nine; 10-12; 13-15 and 16-18.
All registered participants must attend the various sessions programmed by the coordinators. For more information and registration in the Children’s Category (Categories A & B), please visit La Biblio de l@s Niñ@s hall. In the Juvenile category (Categories C & D), information will be available at the Mi Espacio hall. In both cases, information will be available Monday-Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. – to 6:00 p.m. For additional information, please call 809-685-4276.
Each year between 300 and 500 children and young adults pack the Library halls during this significant event.
