International Jazz Day Celebration 2019 Officials Recognize, Among Others, Contributions of Jordi Masalles, Sócrates García and Ernesto Núñez

April 30 is the day designated as International Jazz Day, as declared by UNESCO in 2011. The Dominican Republic has been an active participant in this international celebration since the very beginning, and each year recognizes those individuals that have made great contributions to this musical genre in the country.

The Ministry of Tourism, “Jazz en Dominicana” and the Dominican Fiesta Hotel & Casino will come together this year to celebrate International Jazz Day on Friday, April 26. And, with the approval of UNESCO, International Jazz Day and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, the D.R. will actively participate in this worldwide celebration. Various jazz events and special radio programs will be held throughout the country to celebrate this special musical genre.

Since 2012, the country honors those musicians, producers and others who – through their contributions – have popularized jazz in the country. This year the country will honor musicians Jordi Masalles, Sócrates García and Ernesto Núñez. Also, producers Milagros Germán, Félix Germán and Eddys Rodríguez, in charge of the Jazz Festival “Jazz en la Loma” (Jazz on the Hill) in SAJOMA. “International Jazz Day is a way to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe, and it is celebrated annually through various activities on April 30,” stated Herbie Hancock, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
